  17. <p>     Writers always complain about bad reviews, but usually the ones
  18. they complain about are their own. These days STEPHEN KING is
  19. up in arms about critics who have attacked a book by someone
  20. else. SCOTT SMITH's much hyped first novel, A Simple Plan, about
  21. bloody squabbles over found money, has got mixed reviews. King,
  22. who loves the book, has rushed to its defense in newspaper ads
  23. and in an appearance on Good Morning America. "I'm tired of
  24. reviewers who equate popular fiction strictly with formula,"
  25. says King, "a formula they claim to despise."
